Guilin is regarded as the most picturesque city in China. Two crystal-clear rivers meander through the city, which are encircled by hills with unusual and bizarre rock formations and caves inside. Two crusted movements of earth took place about 200 million years ago thrusting the limestone sediments out of the sea bottom. They were forced upwards more than 200 meters to the surface. This karst formation was molded through many years of erosion by the wind and rain to become the hills and rocks with bizarre shapes. There are numerous complete karst (limestone sites), which are of high scientific value and tour value. The classical attractions include the "Three hills, Two caves and One river" (referring to Diecai Hill, Fubo Hill and Elephant Trunk Hill, Reed Flute Cave and Seven-Star Cave, and the world-renowned Lijiang River). Guilin's unique natural and man-made landscapes provide an abundance of options for a never-ending and unforgettable lifetime journey. Whether you would like to take a dream vacation or plan to touch nature in person, you will be exceptionally surprised by what Guilin has to offer.
City Attractions 魅力桂林1. Lijiang River 漓江
Lijiang River Scenic Area is the world's largest and most beautiful karst landscape resort. The Lijiang River is the highlight and climax of any journey to Guilin. The 54 km waterway of the twisty Lijiang River between Zhujiang Pier and Yangshuo cuts between thousands of picturesque peaks. Created by a stirring ''Movement of Mother Nature'', the most famous attractions along the Lijiang River Cruise are the Waterfall near Yang Causeway, Misty scene of Langshi, Nine-Horse Fresco, Charming Reflection at Yellow-cloth Shoal and Xingping Wonderland. All of these make the Lijiang River Cruise a perfect everlasting memory.
2. Elephant Trunk Hill 象鼻山
As the emblem of Guilin City, the Elephant Trunk Hill lies at the meeting point of the Peach Blossom and Lijiang River. It was given its name because the hill looks exactly like an elephant drinking from the river with its trunk. Besides, it is a masterpiece of karst landscape, composed of pure limestone deposited on the sea floor 360 million years ago. This hill resembles an elephant sucking water. The Elephant Eye Rock perches high up the hill, with a hole running through it from left to right. Between the elephant's trunk and the body is a big round hole. It's reflection in the water is the exact image of the full moon, and hence its name "water Moon Cave". On the cliff there are more than 50 pieces of carved inscriptions belong to different periods. At the moonlight night, you will feel yourself merged with the moon in the sky, the moon in the cave and the moon at the river bottom. It is a symbol and landmark of the city.
Fubo Hill 伏波山
Standing magnificently on the side of the river, the Fubo hill is so called because it serves to stem the torrents coming down the surrounding higher ground in summer, thus forming whirlpools. A climb to the top of the hill offers visitors an extensive view of some charming scenery, including the sunrise over Yao Hill with Zizhou Islet enshrouded in the mist and Old Man Hill in the distance. At its foot is Pearl Cave.
Diecai Hill 叠彩山
This area is composed of Silver Hill, Yuyue Hill, Red Crown Crane Hill and Bright Moon Hill. The Diecai Hill earned its name due to the fact that its fault layers look like pieces of piled brocades. Standing on the top of the hill, you will get a panoramic view of the city. It was developed in Tang Dynasty and many carved Buddha on precipices appeared all at once in Song and Yuan Dynasty, with endless burning incenses. In Ming and Qing Dynasty, it became a meeting place for poets and painters.
3. Guilin Prince City 靖江王府
Located in the center of Guilin, Jingjiang Prince's Residence (also named Guilin Prince City) embraces a solemn atmosphere, guarded by high walls and a deep gate. It was built in 1372, and the city's wall was constructed in 1393. Having a history of more than 630 years, Jingjiang Prince's Residence finished its construction earlier than the Imperial Palace of Beijing. Besides, the Jingjiang Mausoleum is located at the foot of Yao Mountain in the eastern suburb of Guilin. It is a mausoleum for a royal family - the Jingjiang Family in Ming Dynasty whose eleven generations were buried. Moreover, there are more than 300 tombs covering 100 square kilometers, making up the biggest ancient tomb group in south China. The well-preserved tombs have become important relics of culture and history in Guilin.
Solitary Beauty Peak 独秀峰
The Solitary Beauty Peak rises sheer from the ground inside the palace in the center of the city. It has acquired a fame of "the Pillar Holding up the Southern Sky" because of its majesty. The climb to the top is steep but there are good views of the town, the Lijiang River and the surrounding hills. On the eastern cliff there remains giant engraved characters by the Qing dynasty calligraphers.
4. Seven-Star Park 七星公园
Located in the east of the Lijiang River, Seven-Star Park derives from the Seven-Star Cave, which is one kilometer away from the downtown. It is the biggest and most comprehensive park in Guilin with an area of 134.7 hectares. Also, it is one of the first batch of the highest level of National Tour Attractions which officially recognized by China National Tourism Administration.Seven-Star Cave 七星岩
The Seven-Star Park boasts of the green hills, crystal water, fantastic caves and beautiful rocks. The ancient Floral Bridge straddles at the southern entrance. To the east of Seven-Star Hill stands the Camel Hill, at the foot of which the US president Bill Clinton once made a public speech on environmental protection in 1998. Besides, the Seven-Star Cave, the zoo and potted landscape Garden are worthy of being seen.
5. Reed Flute Cave 芦笛岩
Situated at the foot of Guangming Hill in northeastern Guiln, the Reed Flute Cave got its name from the kind of reed growing immediately outside the cave entrance, which is used to make fine flutes. It has been a tourist attraction for more than 1,000 years. Inside the cave, there are various stalagmites, stone curtains, stone flowers and stone pillars, which constitute a unique charm, making it known as a palace of natural art.
Surrounding Areas 桂林周边1. Crown Cave 冠岩
Located at Caoping Hui Nationality Village just east of the Lijiang River, about 29 km south of Gulin, the Crown Cave contains a giant underground river system. Equipped with a sightseeing elevator, small trains, sampans and sightseeing roller coasters, it has received a Guinness World Record for having the most numerous means of touring a cave.
2. Yangshuo 阳朔
Yangshuo is located 63 km south of Guilin. As the longest-established "state-level scenic spot area", it has a history of more than 2,000 years. With picturesque rural scenery and rich cultural heritage, it attracts visitors from all over the world every year.
Yangshuo West Street 阳朔西街
Situated in the center of Yangshuo County, West Street is the oldest street in Yangshuo with a history of more than 1,400 years. Over the last 20-some years, West Street has become a meeting place for eastern and western cultures, and the biggest 'foreign language center' in China. It is the most prosperous district in Yangshuo, and each year, approximately 100,000 foreigners come here as part of their travels or to attend advanced studies. Visitors are attracted to West Street by its unique mix of cultures.
Shangri-La 世外桃源
In the orient, the term Shangri-La refers to the ideal living place, which is equivalent to heaven or Elysium in western countries. Throughout time, several completists have been bitterly seeking out their own Shangri-La. As a beautiful landscape kingdom of Guilin, Shangri-La is located not far from Yangshuo (ten minutes by bus) along Guiyang Road. The place has a very natural feeling with an unsurpassable freshness, directed by Yimou Zhang.
3. Impression Sanjie Liu 印象刘三姐
The Impression Sanjie Liu is the core project of The Lijiang River Mountain-Water Theatre, which was invested by Guilin Guangwei Wenhua Tourism and Culture Co.Ltd., and took 5 years to complete. This performance expresses the beautiful scenery of the Lijiang River, the colorful culture of the ethnic groups in Guangxi and the brave imagination of the excellent artists in China. It is the first of its kind in the word.
4. Longsheng Hot Springs 龙胜温泉
Longsheng Hot Springs, reputed as "a heaven of peace and happiness" and a "paradise on earth," is the centerpiece of the national park. Welling out from cracks in the rocks halfway up the mountain, the hot spring water is colorless, tasteless, pure and clear. At 54-58 degrees centigrade, it consists of many trace elements including lithium, strontium, iron, manganese, zinc, copper and others. The water is suitable for drinking and bathing. It also has curative effects on nerves, skin diseases, rheumatism, and arthritis. Since the Longsheng Hot Springs are situated in a deep tranquil valley, surrounded by mountains of dense vegetation, it is warm in the winter and cool in the summer there. It is an ideal resort for tourism, recuperation, health, relaxation and vacation.
